Thai Hom Mali (Khao Dawk Mali 105 and RD15) is grown mainly in the northeast, once a year in the wet season, because the varieties flower by day length. That single crop, and its aroma, keep it at more than twice the price of ordinary white rice.

Pathum Thani fragrant rice can be grown year-round and is cheaper; Vietnamese fragrant varieties compete with both. The US, China, Hong Kong and West Africa are major buyers of Thai jasmine.

What moves these prices

  • The size of the northeast's wet-season crop, which depends on rainfall.
  • New-crop arrivals from November, often priced separately from old crop.
  • Competition from cheaper Vietnamese and Cambodian fragrant rice.

How to read these numbers

FOB is the price loaded on a ship at the exporter's port, before freight and insurance. Most export prices are exporters' offers, not done deals. A tonne of paddy mills to roughly 0.6–0.7 t of rice.
