These are Thailand's official daily paddy (unmilled rice) and Bangkok wholesale prices, published by the Department of Internal Trade on business days. Paddy prices are what mills and traders pay farmers, so they move before export prices do.
A tonne of paddy mills to roughly 0.6 to 0.7 tonnes of rice, so paddy is always cheaper per tonne than milled rice. Prices assume standard moisture; wet paddy straight from the harvester is bought at a discount.
What moves these prices
- Export demand: when Thai FOB quotes rise, mills bid more for paddy within days or weeks.
- Harvest pressure: prices usually dip as the main crop arrives from November.
- Moisture and quality deductions at the mill, which these reference prices do not show.
- Government support schemes for farmers, which can set a floor in some seasons.
How to read these numbers
FOB is the price loaded on a ship at the exporter's port, before freight and insurance. Most export prices are exporters' offers, not done deals. A tonne of paddy mills to roughly 0.6–0.7 t of rice.
