How to read these numbers
- FOB (free on board) is the price loaded on a ship at the exporting country's port, before freight and insurance. TREA prices include a 50 kg PP bag.
- Milled vs paddy. A tonne of paddy mills to roughly 0.6–0.7 t of rice, so paddy prices aren't directly comparable with milled prices.
- Quotes, not trades. Most export prices are what exporters are offering, which can sit slightly above done deals.
- Spliced history. Each line uses the most direct, most frequent source for recent dates, then joins slower sources for earlier years. For example, Thai 5% is TREA weekly, then FAO weekly (from 2000), then the World Bank monthly (from 1960); other Thai grades go back to 1985 with USDA data. A line can change frequency at the join.
- Baht prices are converted from dollars at the ECB daily rate from 1999, the US Federal Reserve's monthly average for 1981–1998, and the World Bank's annual average before that. Until mid-1997 the baht was pegged near 25 to the dollar.
- Hom Mali is quoted by TREA per crop year; the chart uses the newest crop that has a price.
