US long-grain rice comes mostly from Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta; California grows medium-grain. US export prices usually sit well above Asian origins, and the main buyers are in the Americas, especially Mexico, Central America and Haiti.

Chicago's CBOT rough rice futures are for unmilled long-grain paddy in dollars per hundredweight. We can't republish them, but the homepage has a converter that turns a CBOT quote into dollars per tonne.

What moves these prices

  • US planted area, which shifts with soybean and cotton returns.
  • Demand from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
  • The gap to cheaper Asian rice, which limits how far US prices can rise.

How to read these numbers

FOB is the price loaded on a ship at the exporter's port, before freight and insurance. Most export prices are exporters' offers, not done deals. A tonne of paddy mills to roughly 0.6–0.7 t of rice. USDA and FAO prices are monthly and published late. For information only, not trading advice. How the history is spliced, and all sources
