Glutinous or sticky rice is the everyday staple of northern and northeastern Thailand and Laos, and is used across Asia for desserts and snacks. Thailand is the main exporter.
Much of the crop is eaten by the farm families who grow it, so a poor season in the northeast tightens the marketable surplus quickly.
What moves these prices
- Wet-season rainfall in northern and northeastern Thailand.
- Demand from China, Laos and Thai food processors.
- How much farmers keep for their own use after a weak harvest.
How to read these numbers
FOB is the price loaded on a ship at the exporter's port, before freight and insurance. Most export prices are exporters' offers, not done deals. A tonne of paddy mills to roughly 0.6–0.7 t of rice. USDA and FAO prices are monthly and published late. For information only, not trading advice. How the history is spliced, and all sources
