Long-grain white rice with up to 5% broken kernels is the most traded grade in the world, and the one analysts quote when they talk about 'the rice price'. Thai 5% is the oldest benchmark, with World Bank data back to 1960.
The spread between origins matters as much as the level: when Indian or Vietnamese rice is much cheaper than Thai, price-sensitive buyers switch.
What moves these prices
- India's export policy, the biggest single swing factor since 2022.
- Import demand from the Philippines, Indonesia and West Africa.
- El Niño and monsoon rainfall across South and Southeast Asia.
- Exchange rates of the exporting countries against the dollar.
How to read these numbers
FOB is the price loaded on a ship at the exporter's port, before freight and insurance. Most export prices are exporters' offers, not done deals. A tonne of paddy mills to roughly 0.6–0.7 t of rice. USDA and FAO prices are monthly and published late. For information only, not trading advice. How the history is spliced, and all sources
