Parboiled rice is soaked and steamed in the husk before milling, which makes it firmer, more nutritious and less likely to break. The biggest markets are West Africa, South Africa, the Middle East and Bangladesh.
India dominates the trade; it put a 20% duty on parboiled exports in 2023, which lifted Thai and Pakistani parboiled prices until it was removed in 2024.
What moves these prices
- Indian export duties and supply.
- Import demand from Nigeria, Benin, South Africa and Saudi Arabia.
- Paddy prices, since parboiling adds a processing step before milling.
How to read these numbers
FOB is the price loaded on a ship at the exporter's port, before freight and insurance. Most export prices are exporters' offers, not done deals. A tonne of paddy mills to roughly 0.6–0.7 t of rice. USDA and FAO prices are monthly and published late. For information only, not trading advice. How the history is spliced, and all sources
