Pakistan is one of the world's largest rice exporters, selling both long-grain non-basmati rice, mostly from Sindh, and basmati, mostly from Punjab. It competes with India for buyers in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Non-basmati quotes come from USDA and lag by a few months; the basmati line uses FAO's monthly series.

What moves these prices

  • Indian export policy and Indian prices for the same grades.
  • Monsoon rain and flooding in Sindh and Punjab.
  • The rupee and freight costs to Africa and the Gulf.

How to read these numbers

FOB is the price loaded on a ship at the exporter's port, before freight and insurance. Most export prices are exporters' offers, not done deals. A tonne of paddy mills to roughly 0.6–0.7 t of rice.
