Basmati is an extra-long, aromatic rice grown only in the Indo-Gangetic plains of India and Pakistan. It is usually aged before sale and sold mainly to the Gulf, Iran, the UK, the EU and the US.
India's line here is USDA's Pusa basmati quote, which is published late; Pakistan's comes from FAO monthly data.
What moves these prices
- Demand from Iran and the Gulf states, the largest buyers.
- Minimum export prices India has set for basmati at times.
- Crop size in Punjab (both countries) and the rupee.
How to read these numbers
FOB is the price loaded on a ship at the exporter's port, before freight and insurance. Most export prices are exporters' offers, not done deals. A tonne of paddy mills to roughly 0.6–0.7 t of rice. USDA and FAO prices are monthly and published late. For information only, not trading advice. How the history is spliced, and all sources
